Grey Nun Academy Eighth Graders Capture 2016 Sports Awards
June 30, 2016 -- Yardley, PA -- Grey Nun Academy Eighth Grade student athletes were celebrated during an awards ceremony in the McKenna Center on the Academy’s campus earlier this month. Athletic Director and Coach Joe Wilker, who has been with the Academy for 28 years, spoke eloquently about the joy of coaching these gifted students. He touched upon the highlights of a successful fall soccer season followed by an equally rewarding winter basketball campaign that provided several accolades and moments to savor coupled with a myriad of student noteworthy accomplishments.
Coach Wilker has built a powerhouse in sports while at Grey Nun Academy and won championships in multiple sports spanning several years. During a year that was envisioned as a rebuilding year, due to attrition of several outstanding athletes who graduated, it turned into seasons that exceeded expectation for boys, both in soccer and basketball. For the girls, it was exceptional as they fell just short in the season ending basketball championship game.
For the soccer season, Defensive Player of the Year honors went to Stephen Cianci for the boys’ squad and Kelly Rothenberg for the girls’ team. Offensive Player Awards went to Colin Hagan and for the girls, Charlotte Stubbs. This was followed by Most Valuable Player awards in Soccer that went to Joseph Anderson and Lauren Vesey.
To celebrate the basketball season Defensive Player Awards went to Elizabeth Rafferty for the girls and Joseph Anderson for the boys’ team. Offensive Players celebrated were Kelly Rothenberg and Colin Hagan with M.V.P. accolades garnered by Lauren Vesey and Stephen Cianci.
To conclude the awards ceremony Joe Wilker named Kelly Rothenberg as winner of the 2016 Grey Nun Academy Coaches’ Award. Kelly is a superlative student athlete who also competes for other area teams outside of school in multiple sports on the state and national level. She will be attending Mount Saint Joseph Academy in Flourtown, PA this fall to continue her academic and athletic prowess.
