Grey Nun Academy Partners with CCET, St. Mary Medical Trauma Program to Offer ImPACT Concussion Baseline Testing for Student-Athletes

October 15, 2018 (Yardley, PA) -- Grey Nun Academy is proud to announce its partnership with the Bucks County Comprehensive Concussion Education Team, led by the Bucks County IU #22 BrainSTEPS program and St. Mary Medical Trauma Program, to bring ImPACT concussion testing to the Academy’s athletics program.

This nationally recognized program raises the bar in caring for student-athletes by providing live education that includes the most updated information available in the field. Grey Nun Academy has joined a network that currently supports 26 schools with approximately 12,000 students in the Bucks County community.  Through this program, all student-athletes will be required to complete a baseline ImPACT test prior to participation in any organized team sport.

"The health and safety of our student-athletes is of the utmost importance," said Grey Nun Academy Athletic Director Ryan Lynady. "We are glad to have the opportunity to be proactive in recognizing the signs of concussion to be able to keep our students safe on our playing fields. This is a significant benefit to our student-athletes, coaches, and parents, and we are grateful to work with St. Mary's and CCET in bringing this program to GNA."

ImPACT is a concussion assessment tool that measures visual and verbal memory, reaction time, and processing speed, on a computer. ImPACT has two components: baseline testing and post-injury testing which are used in conjunction to determine if a patient can safely return to activity. ImPACT testing is not a diagnostic tool for concussion, however it provides a piece of the picture in how the brain is working to process information.  This tool is used to assist with recovery after a concussion. In addition, Academy teachers, staff and coaches are provided current information and resources to support students who may experience a concussion.

"We are grateful for the opportunity to extend the St. Mary Medical Center mission to support GNA in keeping their student-athletes safe," said Kimberly Everett, Trauma Prevention Coordinator at St. Mary Medical Center.  "Our goal for this program is never to discourage students from participating in the sports they enjoy but rather to empower them to use this information to play safely without any long-term or serious side effects from a possible concussion".
