Students Raise More Than $3,000 for Autism Speaks Foundation
Grey Nun Academy Students Raise More Than $3,000 During “Light It Up Blue” Walk-A-Thon Event for Autism Speaks Foundation
June 8, 2016 -- Yardley, PA -- Limber and ready, students at Grey Nun Academy, a Catholic independent day school serving students in PreK through grade eight, spent part of their Friday morning on April 29th walking the campus to raise awareness and funding for a great cause. In all, student totals well exceeded $3,000.
In support of national Autism Awareness month, The Academy’s Student Council members selected the Autism Speaks Foundation as one of their charitable community service initiatives for the current school year. Autism Speaks has grown into the world's leading science and advocacy organization for autism. The foundation is dedicated to fund research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism; increase awareness of autism spectrum disorders; and advocate for the needs of individuals with autism and their families.
“The Light It Up Blue Walk-A-Thon was an enjoyable event for all participants and provided the added benefit of good exercise while helping others,” said Deborah Kost, Head of School at Grey Nun Academy. “We are so proud of our students for taking the initiative to support an organization like Autism Speaks that is doing such important work.”
Prior to the Friday event, students actively pursued sponsors to contribute a set amount plus an additional sum for each lap completed. The money raised will go directly to fund further research with the goal of an eventual cure for autism.
Students from all grades participated in the walk-a-thon. As part of an incentive contest, the class that generated the greatest amount of donations was later treated to a water ice party; the eighth grade class won the challenge. That announcement at the end of the day brought out the cheers from all students.
This service project is but one example of the many community support initiatives that occur at Grey Nun Academy, as the spirit of giving to others is woven throughout its mission. Efforts like this one are reflective of the Academy’s foundress St. Marguerite d'Youville because they celebrate her legacy as an ambassador of good will and honor her memory to serve those in need.
