Teacher Feature: Mr. David Rad

Mr. David Rad (Eighth Grade Homeroom, Science 6-8, and Honors Math 6-8) is our first teacher feature in our new series: A Visit to the Teacher's Lounge! Here, we ask Grey Nun Academy faculty to answer seven questions about themselves to help our community get to know them better.

What is your favorite thing about being a teacher?

I really love getting the opportunity to help my students learn, grow, and become the best version of themselves. It's also great to see a student when something 'clicks'. Teaching is also fun!

Do you have a teaching "motto?"

Learning doesn't have to be a boring process of simple perfections. Instead, it can be enjoyable and messy; students shouldn't be afraid to have setbacks. No one is perfect! Sometimes we learn best from our mistakes.

What are your goals as a teacher?

I want to prepare my students with knowledge and skills that will help them stand out (be extraordinary) and be their best self. Another goal, that's perhaps more important, is to lead them closer to Jesus Christ so that they may live fully.

What is one thing a teacher said/did that you have never forgotten?

I have just been so blessed by the love and care that teachers and professors have shown me. From Nativity BVM to Roman Catholic High to High Point University. They helped shape me into the person I am today. I can still name every single teacher and class I've ever had. Just amazing educators who helped me to love learning. I'm lucky enough to keep in touch with many of them.

What is the greatest success you've had in teaching?

One of my eighth grade classes planned and executed a Science Day for the entire school to enjoy. They transformed the school's gym into a giant "Biome Dome" and set up interactive stations for the younger students to enjoy. Their research projects were also on display. It was great to see the students so invested in the learning of their younger peers.

What are you currently reading for enjoyment?

'Believe It' by Nick Foles.

What is a little-known/unique fact about you?

I love rock climbing, white water rafting, and Disney World!

Mr. Rad holds a M.Ed. in Educational Leadership and a B.A. in Middle Grades Math and Science Education
