Teacher Feature: Mrs. Christina Schuman
Mrs. Christina Schuman (Seventh Grade Homeroom, Grades 6-8 English Language Arts, and Grades 5-8 QUES2T teacher) is this week's featured teacher in our series: A Visit to the Teacher's Lounge! Here, we ask Grey Nun Academy faculty to answer seven questions about themselves to help our community get to know them better.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A TEACHER?
I love making connections with my students. Whether it is a shared favorite movie, TV show, or book, sometimes that spark ignites a love of learning. I have had students come back and visit me after they graduate, and hearing how they have grown to enjoy ELA makes me proud!
DO YOU HAVE A TEACHING "MOTTO?"
Superman does good. You do well. (Also, contractions are no one’s friend).
WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AS A TEACHER?
One of my goals is to help my students see that they CAN become better readers, even if they do not necessarily love to read. I also want my students to know that I am on their side, and I want to help them reach their full potential. Most of all, my students should see an adult who cares about them, supports them, and listens to them.
WHAT IS ONE THING A TEACHER SAID/DID THAT YOU HAVE NEVER FORGOTTEN?
My 5th grade teacher told me I was not very good at math. I have always believed it, until recently. I do not allow my students to say they are not good at something. There is always room for growth!
WHAT IS THE GREATEST SUCCESS YOU'VE HAD IN TEACHING?
There are many, but last year, one of my students gave a speech at an assembly. He talked about his 7th grade ELA class, and what a difference it made in his life. Though there were many other subjects that were considered more “fun”, he saw growth in himself through his writing.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING FOR ENJOYMENT?
I am trying to get through Hamilton, but I am getting distracted by some very interesting essays on summer reading!
WHAT IS A LITTLE-KNOWN/UNIQUE FACT ABOUT YOU?
I love to dance!
Mrs. Schuman holds a B.S. in Health Studies with certification in Therapeutic Recreation from Temple University and obtained a M.A. in Secondary Education with Certification in English Education from LaSalle University.
